Dinosaur Media, Revisited

I have, from time to time, mentioned the Dinosaur Media. Usually in the context of another newspaper biting the dust—a paper unable or unwilling to enter the 21st Century and to leave their liberal bias behind.

That trend does not apply to the print media alone. It also applies to the broadcast media. They have not made the transition to cable nor the web successfully. I need only to cite MSNBC as an example. It’s interesting that Microsoft has withdrawn from the operation of MSNBC. In coming months Microsoft will slink away from that cesspool completely.

It is not MSNBC that is in the news today. It’s CNN. The Washington Examiner reports on the shrinkage of CNN.

CNN, newspapers hammered as Americans turn to mobile news

Americans are fast turning to mobile devices to get their news, resulting in stunning viewership declines for CNN and existence-threatening readership drops for newspapers, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. The winners: social network sites, online news and websites like the Drudge Report and Yahoo.

CNN is not the only one hurting: Newspaper readership has dropped in half since 2000, with only 23 percent of those polled saying they read a paper. Magazine readership, meanwhile, has dropped to 18 percent, and those getting their news from TV is down to 55 percent, a troubling trend.

As Americans turn away from traditional news platforms, they are embracing mobile delivery, either through cellular phones, computers or wireless tablets, said Pew. And that has naturally given the advantage to social websites like Facebook, traditional news outlets with established websites or web-only sites like Drudge and Yahoo. Pew, for example, included Drudge in their list of the top 18 news websites, reporting that 2 percent of those surveyed get their news most often, the same percentage as the websites for the Washington Post, USA Today and ESPN.

Instead of being dispassionate observers and reporting the news without bias, the media has, for the most part, become nothing more than the propaganda arm of the democrat party and transnational liberals. The article by DOUGLAS MACKINNON appeared in today’s Investor’s Business Daily.

Mainstream Media: Public Enemy No. 1

Mitt Romney can still win this election, but first he has to confront the largest single domestic threat to our liberty, our values, and our national and economic security — the mainstream media.

Most mainstream “journalists” unethically supported then-Sen. Obama in 2008, and most have doubled-down on that bet in 2012. And that biased and corrupt support may be the least of their professional sins.

The nation and world face an epic crisis made more dangerous by the proliferation of terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and twisted minds who’d think nothing of using them to advance their cause or “theology.”

Yet, our mainstream media deliberately choose to ignore these exponentially growing threats while working in concert with the Obama campaign to ensure the president’s re-election.

Much worse, some in the media are themselves betraying national security secrets in an effort to make Obama look more “presidential” or harm the conservative narrative.

Beyond their leaking of highly classified information, the media are a real threat to security because they flat-out know:

• Public employee unions have decimated the finances of an expanding number of cities, counties and states.

• Poverty is rising, unemployment is accelerating, median household incomes have fallen and Obama has created a debt poison-pill that will cripple our economic future.

• Teacher unions are destroying the futures of poor and at-risk children, but the media look the other way to protect one of the largest special interests of the Democrat Party.

• Obama has no foreign policy, and his ineptitude, along with that of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was exposed with the planned terrorist killings of U.S. diplomats in Libya — murders the president dismissed as “bumps in the road.”

Yet the media choose to attack Romney for rightfully calling on the president and Clinton to stop their campaign of appeasement and apology.

• “Green” initiatives such as Solyndra are paybacks to major donors, outright frauds or alternative energy “solutions” with one real purpose: to give liberals false talking-points while sucking hundreds of billions more out of taxpayers’ bank accounts.

The list goes on, but suffice it to say a case can be made that the mainstream media represent a clear and present danger to our well-being.

They also represent a clear and present danger to Gov. Romney’s chances for election.

Even in the age of the Internet, blogs, cable shows and alternative news, I maintain that upwards of 80% of Americans still get 80% of their “news” from the left-leaning mainstream media.

The bias isn’t limited to large metro papers. It continues in local and county wide papers as well.  Our local county weekly, the Democrat-Missourian, is owned by The McClatchy Company, the same company that owns the Kansas City Star. In fact if you subscribe to our county paper, you get the Star’s Sunday edition free. If you look at that paper’s website, you’ll see that it is woefully out of date. Under the “News” tab, the most recent article is dated August 24, 2012. I suppose they’re embarrassed to show their bias on the web, leaving that to their print edition.

We, as subscribers, can work against the liberal bias in our local papers. How? By writing Letters-to-the-Editor. Do your homework, check your grammar and spelling, have someone proof-read your draft and get your facts straight. If your local paper won’t provide fair and unbiased reporting of issues, do so yourself. I had a letter published last week and I submitted another this week. If you are unhappy with the presentation of issues in your paper, tell them and provide your view on the subject.

Who knows? Maybe even a dinosaur can learn when it’s faced with survival…or extinction.

A new decmocrat attack tactic

I’m not a Ron Paul fan. I’ve said that many times.  However he is running as a member of the GOP and that makes him an enemy of the left. He was campaigning in New Hampshire when he was the recipient of this new democrat attack tactic—the media flash mob.

Paul had a scheduled event at a restaurant in Manchester, NH.  It was supposed to be a standard Meet ‘n Greet, press a little flesh, speak to some voters, ask and answer some questions.  Instead the media mobbed the place and filled the restaurant crowding out the voters disrupting the entire campaign event.

Why should we not be surprised. It’s just another tactic by the statists to corrupt the electoral process.

Media mob chases Ron Paul from campaign stop in New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A campaign stop at a New Hampshire eatery unraveled into a bit of a circus when the media scrum chasing Ron Paul apparently became too much for the 76-year-old Texas congressman to handle.
Paul had been planning to make the rounds through Moe Joe’s restaurant before settling down to eat breakfast with his wife, Carol — who said he enjoys apple pancakes — at a table in the corner.
But the plans quickly changed. Barely able to move through the restaurant as hundreds of journalists and videographers surrounded him on all sides, Paul ignored the questions being lobbed at him and slowly inched through the restaurant, offering a few autographs to supporters along the way.
“Guys, you’ve got to take it easy,” shouted one Paul staffer, imploring the media to give the congressman some space.
No such luck.
“Ron Paul: We have you surrounded. We are the media,” sounded the voice from a megaphone as Paul staffers ushered him into a waiting SUV, just minutes after he arrived at the restaurant.

Man, was I sick yesterday!  I think I got a touch of food poisoning. All afternoon I felt really bad…nausea, cold sweats, a bit of light-headedness. By 10pm, I felt good enough to go to bed.  Ugh!  I could do without episodes like this.

We had more storms go through last night.  There was a possibility of light snow but it appears that all went to the north of us.  
It was a quiet night until 4:30am.  My wife and I were awakened by loud barks, howls, growls and all sorts of snarling.  My best guess is that the local coyotes found breakfast.  We have a small creek running along the back of our property and there are a lot of small animals, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, living along it.  I believe one of them was caught by a coyote.  Most pets are kept inside except for some cats.  Cats, if they haven’t been de-clawed, can climb trees and escape.  That’s one reason why we don’t let our cats out. They’ve been de-clawed by a previous owner.

The Cain controversy continues, stoked by liberals and the State Media.  There are now five women who claim he made some unwanted advances—two are still anonymous, three never made a formal complaint. Of those five, one reportedly works for the Obama administration, another is a government employee, the third is a…well there has been a number of labels applied to her.  She lives in the same apartment building as Bill Ayers, former aid to Obama.  Here’s a short synopsis by the UK Dailymail.

  • Filed for bankruptcy twice
  • Accused former boyfriend of harassing her to pay a loan
  • Father found out about allegations on Monday
  • Lived in same building as top Obama aid, Bill Ayers
The “fifth” woman filed no complaint. Her issue was that Herman Cain asked her to get the name of a woman who had asked a question. Cain wanted to give her a more complete answer.  The woman declined but did accept a dinner invitation with Cain and two other colleagues.  The problem? Cain ordered two bottles of wine but left early and stuck the women with the bill.  Seems that I remember Hilliary and Obama doing the same during the last election.
Now some information has come out about one of the two women who did file a complaint and was awarded a small settlement of around $45,000 (very small potatoes for settling harassment claims.)  She has been identified as working for the Obama administration and has a history of filing harassment claims.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A woman who settled a sexual harassment complaint against GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain in 1999 complained three years later at her next job about unfair treatment, saying she should be allowed to work from home after a serious car accident and accusing a manager of circulating a sexually charged email, The Associated Press has learned.
Karen Kraushaar, 55, filed the complaint while working as a spokeswoman at the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the Justice Department in late 2002 or early 2003, with the assistance of her lawyer, Joel Bennett, who also handled her earlier sexual harassment complaint against Cain in 1999. Three former supervisors familiar with Kraushaar‘s complaint, which did not include a claim of sexual harassment, described it for the AP under condition of anonymity because the matter was handled internally by the agency and was not public.
To settle the complaint at the immigration service, Kraushaar initially demanded thousands of dollars in payment, a reinstatement of leave she used after the accident earlier in 2002, promotion on the federal pay scale and a one-year fellowship to Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, according to a former supervisor familiar with the complaint. The promotion itself would have increased her annual salary between $12,000 and $16,000, according to salary tables in 2002 from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

To summarize the five claims, two are still anonymous with one receiving a settlement of around $35,000 and the other anonymous woman never filed a claim at all, another claimant, who did get a settlement, was placed by a woman who has a history of filing such claims to get job advancements and pay raises. Woman “number five” apparently was uncomfortable asking another women her name but felt comfortable enough to go out to dinner with Cain and brought two other women along as well. The remaining is a bimbo, who was described by former CBS anchor Bill Kurtis as, “a former CBS employee with a ‘track record.’ Given her checkered past, a chuckling Kurtis posited that Bialek‘s and Cain’s roles in the alleged car-incident could even have been reversed.” 

As more and more facts emerge, it’s clear this was a planned hatchet job against Herman Cain by the Obama forces.  As Rush says, “the left will tell you whom they fear.” It’s apparent they fear Herman Cain.

Friday Follies: A Positive OpEd on Sarah Palin in the New York Times

Really, I wouldn’t have believed this if someone had told me. As usual, I brought up Drudge this morning and what do I see?
 The New York Times, known for falsifying and fabricating news, has something positive to say!  And—remarkably unbiased.

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — Let us begin by confessing that, if Sarah Palin surfaced to say something intelligent and wise and fresh about the present American condition, many of us would fail to hear it.
That is not how we’re primed to see Ms. Palin. A pugnacious Tea Partyer? Sure. A woman of the people? Yup. A Mama Grizzly? You betcha. 
But something curious happened when Ms. Palin strode onto the stage last weekend at a Tea Party event in Indianola, Iowa. Along with her familiar and predictable swipes at President Barack Obama and the “far left,” she delivered a devastating indictment of the entire U.S. political establishment — left, right and center — and pointed toward a way of transcending the presently unbridgeable political divide.

So here is something I never thought I would write: a column about Sarah Palin’s ideas. 
There was plenty of the usual Palin schtick — words that make clear that she is not speaking to everyone but to a particular strain of American: “The working men and women of this country, you got up off your couch, you came down from the deer stand, you came out of the duck blind, you got off the John Deere, and we took to the streets, and we took to the town halls, and we ended up at the ballot box.”

She made three interlocking points. First, that the United States is now governed by a “permanent political class,” drawn from both parties, that is increasingly cut off from the concerns of regular people. Second, that these Republicans and Democrats have allied with big business to mutual advantage to create what she called “corporate crony capitalism.” Third, that the real political divide in the United States may no longer be between friends and foes of Big Government, but between friends and foes of vast, remote, unaccountable institutions (both public and private). 
In supporting her first point, about the permanent political class, she attacked both parties’ tendency to talk of spending cuts while spending more and more; to stoke public anxiety about a credit downgrade, but take a vacation anyway; to arrive in Washington of modest means and then somehow ride the gravy train to fabulous wealth. She observed that 7 of the 10 wealthiest counties in the United States happen to be suburbs of the nation’s capital. 
Her second point, about money in politics, helped to explain the first. The permanent class stays in power because it positions itself between two deep troughs: the money spent by the government and the money spent by big companies to secure decisions from government that help them make more money. 
“Do you want to know why nothing ever really gets done?” she said, referring to politicians. “It’s because there’s nothing in it for them. They’ve got a lot of mouths to feed — a lot of corporate lobbyists and a lot of special interests that are counting on them to keep the good times and the money rolling along.” 
Because her party has agitated for the wholesale deregulation of money in politics and the unshackling of lobbyists, these will be heard in some quarters as sacrilegious words. 
Ms. Palin’s third point was more striking still: in contrast to the sweeping paeans to capitalism and the free market delivered by the Republican presidential candidates whose ranks she has yet to join, she sought to make a distinction between good capitalists and bad ones. The good ones, in her telling, are those small businesses that take risks and sink and swim in the churning market; the bad ones are well-connected megacorporations that live off bailouts, dodge taxes and profit terrifically while creating no jobs. 
Strangely, she was saying things that liberals might like, if not for Ms. Palin’s having said them. 
“This is not the capitalism of free men and free markets, of innovation and hard work and ethics, of sacrifice and of risk,” she said of the crony variety. She added: “It’s the collusion of big government and big business and big finance to the detriment of all the rest — to the little guys. It’s a slap in the face to our small business owners — the true entrepreneurs, the job creators accounting for 70 percent of the jobs in America.” 
Is there a hint of a political breakthrough hiding in there? 

The political conversation in the United States is paralyzed by a simplistic division of labor. Democrats protect that portion of human flourishing that is threatened by big money and enhanced by government action. Republicans protect that portion of human flourishing that is threatened by big government and enhanced by the free market.

What is seldom said is that human flourishing is a complex and delicate thing, and that we needn’t choose whether government or the market jeopardizes it more, because both can threaten it at the same time. 
Ms. Palin may be hinting at a new political alignment that would pit a vigorous localism against a kind of national-global institutionalism. 
On one side would be those Americans who believe in the power of vast, well-developed institutions like Goldman Sachs, the Teamsters Union, General Electric, Google and the U.S. Department of Education to make the world better. On the other side would be people who believe that power, whether public or private, becomes corrupt and unresponsive the more remote and more anonymous it becomes; they would press to live in self-contained, self-governing enclaves that bear the burden of their own prosperity. 
No one knows yet whether Ms. Palin will actually run for president. But she did just get more interesting.

I have always been a Palin fan.  I makes me grieve when I hear her bad-mouthed by Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham and other ‘Pubs.  The establishment of both parties fear her; perhaps the ‘Pubs more.  Why? Because she has the potential to upset and eliminate the status quo.  She does not travel the country with her family, speaking here and there, suddenly appearing at a park, zoo, touring the country and listening to people, just for the fun of it. 

 
The “lamestream” media, as she calls it, still has power.  Too many still have their opinions formed by the media and the establishment.  The proof of that are some polls that says Palin could not win any electoral race.  I find that hard to believe.
 
Why do I not believe those polls?  Because everywhere Sarah Palin goes, crowds gather.  Even in the rain in Indianola, IA, thousands stood in the drizzle and rain to hear her speak.
 
Palin has power.  Whether it is as a candidate, or as an issue strategist, when she speaks, the country listens.

Dirty Little Secret

There’s s story passing around the internet at the moment about a man who robbed a bank of $1 and then stood by to be arrested.  Why?  To get the free health-care available to jail inmates.

Of course the media glommed on to the story like fleas on a dog.  they took the story and presented at face value. It fit their political and world-views.  It was also totally false.

Oh, he really did rob the bank.  That’s true.  His motivation, however, had no validity.  Why?  Because all around the country, indigent people have access to free health-care.  All they have to do is look a bit.

A Phony Tale Of Woe

Health Care: The story currently making the rounds about the guy who robbed a bank for $1 to get free jailhouse health care is supposed to expose how terrible our medical system is. It actually exposes something worse.
It’s a story tailor made for the news media. James Verone, an out-of-work 59-year-old, robbed a bank in Gastonia, N.C., for $1.
Then he waited patiently for the cops to arrest him.
In an interview with a local TV station, Verone claimed it was out of sheer desperation. He needed health care and had no other way to get it than through the free care provided in jail.
The story flew across the Web and was picked up by ABC News, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Good Morning America and any number of local papers.

Not surprising, since it fit perfectly into one of the media’s cherished memes.

Come see how terrible health care is in the United States! The most expensive in the world, and yet it forces people to take desperate acts to get treatment! Thank goodness for ObamaCare!
There’s just one little, inconvenient fact missing from all this coverage. Verone had access to free care — outside of jail — and plenty of it.
The dirty secret about our health care system is that it is, in fact, very generous to the poor. A recent study from the N.C. Justice Center notes that North Carolina hospitals provided $694 million in free care in 2008.
Nationwide, hospitals provide more than $34 billion in unpaid care. Then there are all the private charities, Medicaid, and various other state and federal programs that offer the poor and destitute access to care.
A hospital in Gastonia, N.C., — Gaston Memorial Hospital — offers discounts up to 100% to low-income patients. There’s also a free health clinic just five miles from where Verone robbed that bank, and many more in nearby Charlotte.
If he wanted to travel a bit farther, Verone could have availed himself of the state-of-the-art medical facilities at the University of North Carolina, whose mandate is to provide “medically necessary health care to the citizens of North Carolina, regardless of their ability to pay.”
That our hapless bank robber apparently didn’t know about any of this is excusable.
But the fact that not one reporter trafficking this story bothered to point these facts out is an example of gross dereliction of duty or extreme bias — or both.

And people wonder why newspapers and other print media are failing and why FOX continues to outpace all other contenders for cable news.  More and more, the people of this nation realize that the MSM, or state media to be more accurate, is a failure and nothing but a tool of the statists who covet this nation.

NEW YORK – U.S. newspaper circulation fell over the past six months at the slowest rate in two years.
Figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations show that while circulation is no longer in free fall, spending on newspapers is not picking up the way it has for many other consumer goods coming out of the Great Recession.
Several trends factor in the decline. Free news on the Web is a big reason. Publishers also have been looking to offset reductions in advertising revenue by raising newsstand and subscription prices, losing some paying customers in the process. And some newspapers have reduced delivery to less profitable areas, figuring the cost of trucking newspapers far afield doesn’t pay off in extra advertising dollars.
According to the audit bureau, average daily circulation fell 5 percent in the six months that ended Sept. 30, compared with the same period a year earlier. That’s better than the 8.7 percent drop seen in the previous reporting period, which ran from October 2009 to March. The last time the reduction rate was lower was in the April-September period of 2008, when circulation fell 4.6 percent.
Sunday circulation fell 4.5 percent in the April-September period, also smaller than the 6.5 percent drop in the six months before that.
The comparisons are based on 635 weekday newspapers and 553 Sunday newspapers that had comparable data for the recent six months and the same period a year ago.
